When it comes to college education, Academic Coaching has gained huge popularity through the years as a transformative force in shaping student success. Academic Coaches don’t just guide students through the mundane work that comes with college study prep and presentations, they equip students with essential skills such as time management, organization, and prioritization.
Academic Coaching goes beyond just chasing grades for your child; it’s about giving them the tools to succeed in all their classes. Unlike tutoring, it looks at fundamental learning strategies that work across different subjects.
In our practice, we use the LASSI (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory) Assessment to learn more about our students and their current study skills. The LASSI is a holistic assessment, which means it focuses on thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs. The LASSI provides a report of results of the areas that the student is doing well in, and areas where they can work on to improve. The LASSI scoring is broken down into three different categories: Skill Component of Strategic Learning, Will Component of Strategic Learning, and Self-regulation Component of Strategic Learning.
Our Academic Coaches utilize the insights from the LASSI Assessment to tailor a more personalized approach to the unique needs of our students. For example, if a student scores low on the Time Management subscale, our coach may work with them to develop personalized strategies for effective time allocation and task prioritization.
For those wanting evidence if academic coaching actually works, we’ve collected statistics from students, showing significant improvements in three key areas:
